John’s Book of Alleged Dances Tech Specs

John’s Book of Alleged Dances is a set of ten short dances for string quartet and rhythm loops stored on audio compact disc. Six of the dances have rhythm loops, as seen below:

1. Hammer & Chisel – (rhythm loops – mono version only)
2. Dogjam – (rhythm loops)
3. Alligator Escalator – no cue
4. Pavane: She’s So Fine – no cue
5. Toot Nipple – no cue
6. Habanera – (rhythm loops)
7. Stubble Crotchet – no cue
8. Rag The Bone – (rhythm loops)
9. Ständchen: The Little Serenade – (rhythm loops – mono version only)
10. Judah to Ocean – (rhythm loops)

The audio compact disc supplied by the publisher contains two sets of performance program material for rhythm loop playback, all on the same CD:

* Set 1 (stereo version) contains six compact disc IDs.
* Set 2 (mono version) contains six compact disc IDs which are sequential in order

Note: Hammer & Chisel and Ständchen are the same mono versions for both Set 1 and Set 2 and can only be performed using the click track.

Set 1(stereo version) – first six CD ID’s (#1-6):
Left Channel – Click track on ID #1 and ID #5 only; other IDs are Left Channel of stereo
Right Channel – Right Channel of stereo except for IDs #1 & #5 which contain mono versions

Set 1 Reminder Note: ID #1 & #5 are mono; ID #2, #3, #4, #6 are stereo

Set 2 (mono version) – second six CD ID’s (#7-12):
Left Channel – click track on ID #1 and ID #5 only
Right Channel – full program material in mono

Suggested Sets to Use and Equipment Lists (below):

* Set 1 should be used for studio recording purposes.
* Set 2 should be used for live performance.

The Alleged Dances can be performed live (non-recording situation) in one of two ways:

1.) All Dances EXCEPT Hammer & Chisel and Ständchen utilizing Set 1 – meaning, no headphones are required but utilizing List 2 below.
2.) All Dances utilizing Set 2 and utilizing List 1 below.

General Live Performance Technical Requirements:

Use Either:
List 1:

• 1 x High quality low-noise sound reinforcement system (*NB)
• 4 x Low-profile headphones
• 1 x Headphone amplifier (w/ min. four separate volume controls respective to each headphone)
• 1 x Stereo compact disc player

Or Use:
List 2:

• 1 x High quality low-noise sound reinforcement system (*NB)
• 2-4 x Set of loudspeaker monitors for string quartet
• 1 x Stereo compact disc player

*NB – High quality low-noise sound reinforcement system: Mixing console with minimum sixteen input channels, minimum four auxiliary sends/returns, and sweepable channel equalization; microphones to amplify string quartet, loudspeakers with discrete equalization (suggested systems include Meyer Sound, Apogee, and EAW).
